It's the End of the Year – Already! Author: Carol Coombs
It's the end of the year – already! It just never ceases to amaze me how fast time flies; each year moving faster and faster. It was a busy year for me, for all of us I am sure, and I don’t see that changing in 2009 as we face many new challenges in the legal world. During difficult times, I am even more grateful to be a part of this Chapter and to count each of... [More Info]

Lawyer jokes aside, law firms are quirky places. But who knew that even technology was affected by the charms of the legal world? Providing technical support at a law firm is very different, very challenging, stated Michael Steele. And Steele should know. As site support manager for the Atlanta office of Epstein Becker & Green, he is intimately familiar with the legal side of technology. ... [More Info]

The Tyranny of Choice Author: N. Scott Pritchard, AIFA Capital Directions, LLC Why 401(K) Plans are Failing and the Cure to Save Them One of life’s great truisms is a corollary known as the Law of Unintended Consequences. It speaks to the notion that many well-intentioned ideas often have results that could have never been anticipated and that are, as military strategists like to say, sub -optimal. In... [More Info]
The Recent Amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act Author: Anne-Marie Mizel What Every Employer Needs to Know New legislation has recently been passed that vastly increases employees’ rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, overruling Supreme Court cases that had limited those rights. Those changes go into effect in just a few weeks. On September 25, 2008, President Bush signed into law a sweeping set of amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA... [More Info]

Have you ever noticed that the same attorneys are always quoted as experts in the news? How did they become the go-to sources for reporters? Do they know more than you do? Probably not. Training in Technology and the Road to Get There Author: Craig Cothern
My journey started last year when I left legal, not by choice, to join the arena of our business partners. So much can be said about the alliances that they bring, but you never understand fully until you are facing a tough road ahead. In very short terms, I found myself transitioned to supporting legal from the outside looking in. It was much like a child looking in the window of a toy store at Christmas time. But support I did, and I... [More Info]
Studies show workplace culture can either strengthen or hamper an organization’s success. And, with the current economic crisis creating uncertainty among workers, businesses, and the future of many law firms, now is the time to look inward. Rethink how your firm can gain a more competitive advantage by nurturing a workforce that also desires success and is willing to work that much harder for it. At the Extraordinary... [More Info]

As we celebrate our last issue for 2008, let’s pause to reflect during this time of year on the many positives in our lives. Heading that list is, of course, is our family and friends. High on our list is our professional lives, at least for me, having a great job and working with wonderful people. The ALA and AALA have provided me with professional and educational opportunities this year. Let’s face it, working in the legal industry can be challenging... [More Info]
